Music in New Orleans

Music in New Orleans

Music is not just a way for people to make money in New Orleans, it is what gets them through the day to day struggles. People sing all over the place down there and you can tell by the smile on their face that they actually enjoy it! It is a part of their culture and no one can take that away from them. New Orleans has been through a lot. Fires, hurricanes, being bought by different countries and having to adapt every time, a lot of discrimination due to religion, and so much heart break. Blues and Jazz more or less originated in New Orleans not by someone looking to make a name, but by someone just trying to get by and this is how they were taught to do it. This city has been called the melting pot of America. It was given this nickname due to the different kinds of people that live there. There are people from literally all over the world that moved to New Orleans over the years and call it home. The music that the city plays is also proof that they are a melting pot. I cannot think of many places that will play almost every genre of music at any given time. I went on this trip for a variety of reasons, one of them being the opportunity to hear real Jazz music. Their music speaks loudly because they don’t just do it for the money. Because they have been through so much, their words and music are telling a story of them and their ancestors. New Orleans tells a powerful story through their music.
