Day 5, January 7th

Day 5, January 7th

St Charles St Street Car
Trying to navigate the city of New Orleans on our own was an interesting and eye-opening part of this trip. Growing up in the country where all the roads are numbered on a grid by county and the towns had only one road going through them, Peoria is a large place to me let alone New Orleans. This week, we did not really leave the French Quarter. We stayed in the Warehouse District, but most of our time was spent in the French Quarter. Today, however, was our free day. We had the entire day to see and do whatever we wanted! Anna, Molly, Amy and I decided to go see the Garden District. My outer journey for today paints that picture if you are interested reading about it! We had been walking to the French Quarter every morning as well as to basically everything else we were doing. The Garden District, however, was almost 4 miles from our hotel. This did not sound like fun to any of us as we had already hit over 80,000 steps since we got off the train. So, we went to the corner of St Charles and St Joseph and caught the street car! We verified that it was going where we needed, and we boarded. We knew which stops were a part of the Garden District, so we rode all the way to the last stop. We got off the street car, found a cute little shop, and we talked to some of the locals, asking where the best houses were to see. The locals were the key to navigating wherever you wanted to go because they know all the best spots. However, they do not give directions like we do, they tell you if its towards the river or away from the river, etc. This was definitely a learning curve and it took more than one person to remember how to get from place to place, no matter if we were in the French Quarter or another part of New Orleans.
