Farewell, New Orleans

Day 6, January 8th - Farewell.

As we prepared to leave, we were asked to think back about our favorite place in New Orleans, go there, and take a picture. My favorite place? Jackson Square. This was the beginning of most of our exciting journeys! Almost every morning we met on Decatur Street, which is on the riverside of the square, right in front of the square. We would walk together from there to where ever the adventure for the day was. This was not just a meeting spot though, it is also a spot of historical significance. The St Louis Cathedral stands elegantly opposite of Decatur Street (to Andrew Jackson’s right) and the Cabildo and Presbytere decorate either side of the Cathedral. In front and behind of Andrew Jackson, stand the 1850 apartments. There are grey, stone statues standing in the corners of the garden representing the four seasons. I would definitely come back to the square and I would recommend it to anyone visiting New Orleans. The wrought iron fence that surrounds the square is locked at night to preserve the area, which I think is really cool. The sidewalks that guide you through the square were kind of like a mix between brick and concrete, having the look of concrete but the color and texture of brick. When entering from the riverside, there are green bushes on both sides and the statue of Andrew Jackson straight ahead. The bushes and trees go all the way around the square, covering the fence except in the places where you exit. After you walk past the statue, there is a 2-tiered fountain with crystal clear water flowing from the top down. When you go to exit the square on the other side, the cathedral stands, towering above the sidewalk where the musicians and artists gather. Jackson Square is a must see.
