Day 3, January 5th

Day 3, January 5th:

The sound of cars honking for the right of way, the pedestrians not minding the cars, the smell of creole seasoning, and the sense of impending doom with the feeling of oh-crap-someone-is-going-to-get-hit. This is the scene of New Orleans on a Saturday. We met in front of a restaurant called Tujague’s to begin our cuisine tour. As we entered, the smell of liquor and the restaurant’s Creole seasonings overwhelmed our noses. After our tour guide, Naif, gave us some history out mouths had the same opportunity to be overwhelmed. The Beef Brisket was absolutely amazing. I am not a horseradish lover, so I scraped it off and ate just the meat. It was juicy, not too chewy, and had just the right amount of fat on it so the taste was perfect. We learned about a lot of spices I cannot pronounce at the next stop. We had something called Mardi Gras dip that made may taste buds explode. I do not usually like spicy things or anything besides meat and potatoes really. This dip, however, was just the right kind of spicy (for those at home, don’t worry – I am bringing some back!) Other things we ate on the cuisine tour included Red Beans a Rice, which looked like chili but tasted just like it sounds – like red beans and rice. We also ate Seafood gumbo. I do not care for seafood and gumbo is not my favorite anyway – both of these factors put together did not leave me enjoying this seafood gumbo. However, we went across the street for Pralines next and they were amazing – sweet and savory. So sweet that after a couple bites I couldn’t eat anymore.
